Bible verses about stars

The Bible verses about stars don’t speak about what the stars are made of or how much they weigh.

The verses about stars speak about stars’ purpose.

God created them to mark time and to serve as lights and symbols.

They were guiding the ancient people in their travels. A special star most famously guided the three wise men to worship the newborn Jesus in Bethlehem.

With the verses below about the stars, we will guide you toward a better understanding of stars in the Bible.

Bible verses about stars related to Jesus

The Bible verses about stars that refer to Jesus speak about Him as “the Morning Star” and “the sun of righteousness.”

Messianic prophecies speak about the messiah as a star coming out of Israel.

After Jesus ascended to the Father, He showed Himself to John in a vision where his face shone like the sun. The sun reflects the glory of God, which the glorified saints will participate in. This is why Matthew 13:43 says, “The righteous will shine like the sun in the Kingdom of their Father.”

Matthew 2:2

“Where is he who is born King of the Jews? For we saw his star in the east, and have come to worship him.”

Matthew 2:9

They, having heard the king, went their way; and behold, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them until it came and stood over where the young child was.

Revelation 22:16

I, Jesus, have sent my angel to testify these things to you for the assemblies. I am the root and the offspring of David, the Bright and Morning Star.”

Numbers 24:17

I see him, but not now.

I see him, but not near.

A star will come out of Jacob.

A scepter will rise out of Israel,

and shall strike through the corners of Moab,

and crush all the sons of Sheth.

Malachi 4:2

But to you who fear my name shall the sun of righteousness arise with healing in its wings. You will go out, and leap like calves of the stall.

Revelation 1:16

He had seven stars in his right hand. Out of his mouth proceeded a sharp two-edged sword. His face was like the sun shining at its brightest.

Bible verses of God creating the stars

God has created the universe and everything in it. He set the stars in the firmament that separates heaven and earth.

The Bible verses about stars, especially in the poetic Psalms, not only speak of God’s power but also paint a picture of the beauty and magnificence of His creation. He counts the number of stars and knows them all by name.

Genesis 1:14-18 (ESV)

And God said, “Let there be lights in the expanse of the heavens to separate the day from the night. And let them be for signs and for seasons, and for days and years, and let them be lights in the expanse of the heavens to give light upon the earth.” And it was so. And God made the two great lights—the greater light to rule the day and the lesser light to rule the night—and the stars. And God set them in the expanse of the heavens to give light on the earth, to rule over the day and over the night, and to separate the light from the darkness. And God saw that it was good. And there was evening and there was morning, the fourth day.

Psalms 8:3

When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers,

    the moon and the stars, which you have ordained;

Psalms 19:1

The heavens declare the glory of God.

    The expanse shows his handiwork.

He calls them all by their names.

Jeremiah 31:35

Yahweh, who gives the sun for a light by day,

and the ordinances of the moon and of the stars for a light by night,

who stirs up the sea, so that its waves roar;

Yahweh of Armies is his name, says:

What stars are mentioned in the Bible by name?

The Bible mentions the sun many times and refers to God (Psalm 84:11) and Jesus (Malachi 4:2, Revelation 1:16) as the sun.

The sun is a star and the central body of the earth’s solar system, around which the planets revolve and from which they receive light and heat. Many other solar systems have many suns but ours just one.

Addition to the sun, the Bible mentions few constellations.

Pleiades – a conspicuous group or cluster of stars in the constellation Taurus, commonly spoken of as seven, though only six are visible.

Orion – the Hunter, a constellation lying on the celestial equator between Canis Major and Taurus, containing the bright stars Betelgeuse and Rigel.

The Bear, Ursa Major – the Great Bear, the most prominent northern constellation, containing the seven stars that form the Big Dipper.

“Bear’s cubs”, Ursa Minor – the Little or Lesser Bear, the northernmost constellation, containing the stars that form the Little Dipper, the outermost of which, at the end of the handle, is Polaris.

Amos 5:8

seek him who made the Pleiades and Orion,

and turns the shadow of death into the morning,

    and makes the day dark with night;

who calls for the waters of the sea,

and pours them out on the surface of the earth, Yahweh is his name,

Job 9:9

He makes the Bear, Orion, and the Pleiades,

and the rooms of the south.

Job 38:31-32
